Quality in work and productivity
Vicente Royuela, Jordi Suriñach. 2009.

Abstract: We inspect the relationship between quality in work and productivity. Using recent Spanish aggregate data for the period 2001-2006, we find that quality in work is an important factor to explain productivity levels in sectors and regions. Consequently, quality in work is not only an objective per se, but it also may be a production factor able to increase the wealth of regions. In our work we use two alternatives definitions of quality in work, coming respectively from survey data and from a social indicators approach. Besides, we employ two different measurements of labour productivity, in order to test the robustness of our result. We estimate our model using a simultaneous equation model for our panel of data, and we find important differences in high tech and low tech sectors. The former display a positive relationship between quality in work and productivity, while the latter show a negative relationship.

Modelling quality of life and population growth using simultaneous equation models.  The case of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.
Vicente Royuela, Alessandra Faggian. 2008.

Abstract: In this work we look at changes in the intra-metropolitan distribution of population. We use the classical determinants of urban growth to test which ones are more important within a metropolitan area. These determinants are: amenities and disamenities, which are considered as constituents of the more global concept of quality of life; the supply-oriented dynamic approach; and the city network paradigm. In particular we focus our paper on the role of quality of life variables in urban growth. In this sense, as we expect a potential endogeneity between quality of life and urban size (growth), we use a simultaneous equation model. We also expect a spatial relationship between the considered variables. Thus, we estimate our simultaneous equation model empirically using several alternatives, including spatial econometrics. Our exercise is developed in a local dynamic framework, the Metropolitan Area of the city of Barcelona (Spain), in the period 1991-2004.

Defining housing market areas using commuting and migration algorithms.Catalonia (Spain) as an applied case study.
Vicente Royuela, Miguel Vargas. 2007, 20 pàg. IREA-Working Paper 2007/07

Abstract: In the literature on housing market areas, different approaches can be found to defining them, for example, using travel-to-work areas and, more recently, making use of migration data. Here we propose a simple exercise to shed light on which approach performs better. Using regional data from Catalonia, Spain, we have computed housing market areas with both commuting data and migration data. In order to decide which procedure shows superior performance, we have looked at uniformity of prices within areas. The main finding is that commuting algorithms present more homogeneous areas in terms of housing prices.

Is the influence of quality of life on urban growth non-stationary in space? A case study of Barcelona.
Vicente Royuela, Rosina Moreno and Esther Vayá. 2007, 25 pàg.IREA-Working Paper 2007/03

Abstract: There are several determinants that influence household location decisions. More concretely, recent economic literature assigns an increasingly important role to the variables governing quality of life. Nevertheless, the spatial stationarity of the parameters is implicitly assumed in most studies. Here we analyse the role of quality of life in urban economics and test for the spatial stationarity of the relationship between city growth and quality of life.

Research networks and scientific production in Economics: The recent spanish experience.
Juan Carlos Duque. Raúl Ramos, Vicente Royuela. 2007, 10 pàg. IREA-Working Paper 2007/01

Abstract: This paper studies Spanish scientific production in Economics from 1994 to 2004. It focuses on aspects that have received little attention in other bibliometric studies, such as the impact of research and the role of scientific collaborations in the publications produced by Spanish universities. Our results show that national research networks have played a fundamental role in the increase in Spanish scientific production in this discipline.

Economía Urbana y Calidad de Vida. Una revisión del estado del conocimiento en España.
Vicente Royuela, Diona Lambiri, and Bianca Biagi.
2006, 23 pàg. IREA-Working Paper 2006/06

Abstract: Quality of life is increasingly becoming a concept researched empirically and theoretically in the field of economics. In urban economics in particular, this increasing interest stems mainly from the fact that quality of life affects urban competitiveness and urban growth: research shows that when households and businesses decide where to locate, quality of life considerations can play a very important role. The purpose of the present paper is to examine the way economic literature and urban economic literature in particular, have adopted quality of life considerations in the economic thinking. Moreover, it presents the ways various studies have attempted to capture the multidimensional nature of the concept, and quantify it for the purposes of empirical research. Additionally we focus on the state of the art in Spain. Looking at the experiences in the last years we see very important possibilities of developing new studies in the field.
